Cleaning Before and After a Big Family Gathering
Split the job in two. The clean after the gathering matters more than the clean before it, and here is the case for that, with a last-hour triage list.
Split the job in two, and be clear about which half matters. The clean after the gathering matters more than the clean before it.
That runs against instinct, because the before-clean is the one people feel anxious about. But guests register a narrow set of things and forgive nearly everything else, whereas the mess left behind is the mess that becomes permanent. Grease that is warm and soft on Thursday night is varnish by Sunday. Wine on a sofa cushion is a stain by Saturday. A refrigerator full of things nobody has a plan for is a smell by Tuesday.
So: a third of your effort before, two thirds after.
Before: what guests actually register
The first ten seconds. The entryway. Cleared surface, no shoes underfoot, floor swept, and somewhere for coats that is not the back of a chair. This carries more weight than anything else on the list because it sets what people expect from the rest of the house.
The guest bathroom, all of it. Not the toilet and the sink — the whole room, floor included, because that is the one place a guest is alone with nothing to look at. Mirror, taps, the floor around the base of the toilet, a fresh hand towel, and enough paper that nobody has to go looking.
Any surface food will touch. Counters, the dining table, the side table where drinks end up.
Smell. Trash out before anyone arrives, disposal run, and any cooking smell you have stopped noticing dealt with by opening something for five minutes.
The seat they will sit in. Vacuum the sofa. People put their hands down beside the cushions.
What they do not register: the inside of the oven, the baseboards in the back hall, the state of any closet, or the floor under the bed in the room nobody is going into.
The last hour, in order
If you have sixty minutes and people are coming, do these five things and stop.
- Trash and recycling out of the house, fresh bag in the bin
- Guest bathroom: toilet, sink, mirror, floor, fresh towel, check the paper
- Entry: sweep, shoes away, clear the drop surface
- Kitchen: counters cleared and wiped, sink empty, dishwasher running or empty
- Lights on, one window open for five minutes, then shut
Anything not on that list can wait, and will not be noticed.
After: the things that get worse if left
This is the half worth doing properly, and the half people are least inclined to do at eleven at night. Doing it the next morning at half energy is fine. Doing it on Sunday is not.
Kitchen grease. The range hood, the backsplash and the wall behind the stove. Warm grease wipes off. Grease that has cooled and cured through three days needs a degreaser and a lot more time.
Spills on fabric. Blot, do not rub. Cold water first. Treat afterwards. The window in which most food and drink comes out of upholstery is measured in hours.
The refrigerator. Everything that came out of somebody’s dish and went in without a plan. Decide on Friday morning, not the following Wednesday.
Trash, out of the house. Not stacked in the garage. A garage in Central Texas is not cold in November and organic waste does not care what month it is.
Glassware and the dishwasher filter. After a large meal the filter is loaded, and a loaded filter is why the next load comes out gritty and everyone blames the machine.
Floors, last. There is no point mopping until the food traffic has stopped.
The version where you hand off half of it
If you are going to bring in help for one of the two, bring it in for the after. It is the one with a deadline attached to the outcome, it is the one nobody wants to do, and it is the one where a crew with a degreaser and three hours produces a genuinely different result from a tired host with a sponge.
It is also, in practice, easier to book. The week before a holiday is the most requested week of the year. The week after is not.
The rule of thumb
Before the gathering, clean what people see and touch. After it, clean what will otherwise set. If you only have energy for one of the two, the second one is the one that decides what December looks like.
